Sunlight and Space: Designing Around Large Windows and Glass Patio Doors
Learn how to style your North Portland apartment to maximize natural light from huge windows and glass patio doors while maintaining privacy at Humboldt25
One of the most striking architectural features of our one-bedroom apartments at Humboldt25 is the sheer amount of natural light. With expansive 10-foot ceilings, a ton of huge windows in every unit, and glass doors leading out to your private patio or balcony, the open floor plans are designed to feel airy, expansive, and deeply connected to the outdoors.
Having an abundance of natural light is a dream, especially during the moody Pacific Northwest winters. However, designing around massive windows and glass doors in an urban setting comes with a unique challenge: how do you embrace all that beautiful sunlight while still maintaining a cozy sense of privacy?
Here is how to intentionally style your space at Humboldt25 to get the best of both worlds.
1. Embrace Layered Window Treatments
When you have expansive windows and glass doors, you don't have to choose between total exposure and total darkness. Layering your window treatments is the ultimate design hack for urban apartments.
The Privacy Layer: Hang light-filtering sheer curtains (linen or cotton blends work beautifully). They allow the natural light to pour in while softly blurring the view from the street or courtyard.
The Cozy Layer: Add a second layer of heavier drapes—like a rich velvet or thick woven cotton—that you can pull completely closed at night over your windows and patio doors to anchor the room and create a warm, secure retreat.
2. Float Your Furniture and Protect Your Pathways
It can be tempting to push your sofa or bed right up against the wall to maximize your square footage, but doing so can inadvertently block your huge windows or disrupt the flow to your outdoor space. Instead, "float" your furniture a few feet away from the glass. Make sure you leave a clear, open pathway to your glass patio doors to seamlessly connect your indoor and outdoor living areas. Keeping the sightlines open highlights the architectural height of the 10-foot ceilings and allows the light to wrap fully around your furniture.
3. Bounce the Light with Strategic Mirrors
Portland is famous for its overcast days, so you want to make the most of the sunlight you have. Hanging a large mirror on the wall directly opposite your biggest windows or your patio door will act like a secondary light source, reflecting the sun deep into the interior of your apartment. You can also add subtle reflective accents, like metallic light fixtures, glass vases, or glossy ceramic planters, to scatter light throughout the room.
4. Ground the Space with Organic Textures
Because large, modern windows and sleek glass doors inherently feel very clean and architectural, it is important to add warmth to the rest of the room so it doesn't feel sterile. Contrast the expansive glass with highly textured, Pacific Northwest-inspired organic materials. Think chunky wool throw blankets, natural jute or vintage Persian rugs, and warm wood accents. This creates a grounded, cozy mood that perfectly balances the open, airy feel of the sunlight.
